The consultant will do an assessment to determine your level of snoring and sleep apnoea. Some questions you may be asked include:
- Do you wake up with a dry mouth or a sore throat?
- Do you feel you lack sleep in general?
- Do you have difficulty waking up in the morning?
- Do you feel sleepy, fatigued and tired during the day?
From these various questions, your consultant will determine which snoring treatment is best suited to your needs. This is especially the case if you’re consulting about SleepTight. If SleepTight isn’t the treatment for you, there will be recommendations on alternative treatments that are suitable for your condition.
What happens during the treatment?
From the consultation, we will see whether you’re a suitable candidate for the SleepTight treatment process. If you are, then during your SleepTight treatment, the heating technique occurs in 2 stages:
- Initial skin contraction and tightening
- Strengthening the tissue with new collagen
How long does it take?
The treatment process lasts approximately 20 minutes, and and there are seven treatments over 12 months.
What does it feel like?
Clients report a warm sensation such as hot pin pricks at the back of the throat. It’s not a painful treatment with minimum discomfort afterwards.
What actually happens during the treatment?
During the treatment, there’s an immediate contraction and tightening of the collagen tissues causing obstruction at the back of the throat. The collagen tissues are made of strands of protein and when you heat protein, it tightens and contracts.
How will I feel after treatment?
Immediately after one treatment, most patients feel a slight tightening of tissues and contraction at the back of the throat. Consequently, you’re able to breath deeper and it feels like the airway is more open at the back of the throat. There’s no known serious side effects of this treatment. Some patients have had a slightly dry or ‘scratchy’ throat for a day. Very occasionally there may be a slight heat blister, lasting up to three days.
Do I need to wear a mouth guard at any stage of the treatment?
No, you don’t. This is not a mouth guard snoring treatment.
Do I need to take time off work?
No, there’s no down time required as SleepTight is a ‘walk-in, walk-out’ procedure. There’s no chemical treatment or anaesthesia involved, so you can return to your normal routine straight away.
Is there any post care required?
Typically no after-care is required. You may have some mild discomfort for a few days after treatment, which can be relieved by gargling salt water 3 times per day. The process of new collagen formation concludes approximately 4 months after each treatment. This is when the symptoms of snoring and sleep apnoea should be at their least.
Over time, these tissues begin to loosen, sag and drop down again, causing the airway to narrow and vibrate. This is a natural part of ageing, and maintenance treatments will quickly reverse and improve any deterioration.
